Wildfires are burning in the Ontario area of Canada as well as the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness in Minnesota, which US officials have closed as they fight to put out the blazes.

Heavy, pungent wildfire smoke darkened skies in the US from the Great Lakes to parts of the East Coast, reducing visibility and prompting warnings that breathing the air outside could be dangerous.

In response to the smoke, US President Donald Trump made a social media post Friday that blamed Canada for its forest management and threatened additional tariffs on Canada.

The Canadian government didn't initially respond to questions about Trump's comments.

Asked about the US response, Ontario's premier Doug Ford criticised the administration's rhetoric. "To make the comments they did through the administration, unacceptable. Absolutely unacceptable."

He also calls on Trump to "get rid of" the softwood lumber tariffs, a construction material the US relies heavily on.
